Shawn Corey Carter was born in Pinegrove, Virginia. From an early age, he became obsessed with music and learning how to sing and play the guitar. At the age of sixteen, he was trying to get into colleges but was rejected by all of them. This lead him to pursue various careers in painting, movies, singing, and sound editing but failed every time.

After failing to secure a recording contract, Shawn decided to go into acting. He appeared in a number of films including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Team. He also appeared in The Perfect Score, Pretty Woman, The Pursuit of Happyness, and Edward Scissorhands, among many others. All of these efforts helped him secure a role on the reality show Survivor. It was here, according to the press release, that Shawn Corey Carter was discovered.

It was at this point that Shawn began working with fellow rap artist, Andres Young, better known as Marshall James, to form what would become Cash-A-Million. It is believed that the group was formed out of a desire to record a duet album with Andres Young and Usher. Their first song, “Xxplosive,” was recorded by Usher and became the basis for their debut album, featuring guest spots by Pharrell Williams, J.J. Simpson, and Mary J. Blige.

The success of their first album, American Rhapsody, paved the way for what would become Shawn’s next project, Stick You With Me, which was met with critical acclaim. This was followed by the even bigger hit, American Pie, which went Platinum in the US and was certified gold in the UK. Shawn’s next effort, Street Dreams and Stuntman, followed in 2021. Though it didn’t do well financially, it did become a number one hit in the US and overseas. It was then the move that was talked about when Shawn Corey Carter was being considered for the American Music Awards as a nominee for best rapper.
